Photo of Chapel Cove, Pictured Rocks NLS. Unfortunately the photo does not due justice to the grandeur of the place. To put it in perspective the depth of the chasm is about 80 ft. the span between the ledge on the right to the ice on the left is about 80 ft, the length at the bottom about 400 feet. The big stalactite touches the lake ice below. The cliffs are composed of sandstone laced with pockets of minerals, water filtering through the rock absorbs the minerals and stains the ice bright colors, iron produces red, copper green, and a mixture of others bring out the blues and orange. This photo is from the late 70?s and the result of a grueling 14 hour nonstop run on skis. Since then the road has been upgraded and the distance cut in half.
