Jim, I suppose the bug suit looks kind of dorky but then I never considered myself much of a fashion icon. I don't like wearing one simply because looking through the netting makes everything look fuzzy. Blacking out the eye area with a felt marker helps cut the distraction but it's still a royal pain to wear one. My wife wears one all the time, for me it's the method of last resort.
The mosquitos are bad enough but we have two other flies that are unique to this area, for starters there is what the locals call the fish fly, I don't know the official name, but they are the size of a large house fly and hatch out in deep clear water. For some reason they are sensitive to heat and humidity and go totally beserk when conditions are right. They like dark clothes and it's not uncommon to be covered by hundreds at a time. They don't just sting like a normal fly but will take a hunk of flesh right out of you. No known repellent seems to work against them. Fortunately they don't come inland very far and are only a problem on those super hot humid days. The other mega pest is the no-see-um, tiny little piece of crap that is small enough to go through window screens, enough to drive anyone nuts. This is the big reason summer is my least favorite time of year. Standing joke around here is when you quote a job during bugg season you add another 5% for repellent.
