Well, I'm glad to hear from you, stranger! Long time no chat!
How the hell are you?
You ever get that Bicycle built yet?
People are scattered everywhere on several forums now, but I reckon you knew that already. There is still jack ass' on everyone, I guess some things never change.
I'm still piddling with my projects. I've managed to mely some steel with some used oil, working on making a nice heating system that's cheap to build and use. A small unit hopefully will heat a big space.
I'm getting close to running a 4 cycle engine on hydrogen gas. Actually have done it a few times, but so far only at an idle.
Made a lawn mower engine into an air compressor, but it ain't perfect yet.
Anyway, I figured I'd see what you was up too.
I hope all has been well on your end.

Been a while.
Got a new idea on the bike.
I found an old "razor" scooter.
24v motor.
I am thinking of cutting off the front end of the scooter, and mounting it backwards on the back of the bike, like a bike rack.
Press the tire down on top of the bike tire, for friction drive.
I'm hoping I can make it work with two lawn mower batteries. Put those on top of the "rack". Both to run the motor, and to give it some weight.
Probably be a while before I actually get it done. I have plenty of other projects to finish first.
You have some pictures of the metal "melter" ?? Descriptions ? Instructions ?
And that heater too !
And I'm betting that you are going to make the hydrogen, as well. LOL
Lawn mower engine as air compressor. Wonder what all those burned hydrocarbons will do to your tires ?
~~~
I have been trying out different kinds of Linux.
So far, Kubuntu has the prize.
I just downloaded Linux Mint today, at the library. Probably try that one out, tomorrow.
I need to figure out a way to download all of the repository, for whatever I decide to keep. I went through my entire broadband allotment, (5 gigs of data), in about two weeks. Can't keep doing that.
I need to figure out how to download the complete repository while I am at the library, and then put it on a hard drive here at home, and use it.
So, the bike project has changed some! Well it is typical, most of my original ideas for projects get altered/changed some once I start looking, building, and thinking about it more. I'm on version 4.0 for my furnace, version 3.2 for my reactor, and version 2.0 for my air compressor.
Here's a link to my latest furnace: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62iLOFOirjM
Be forewarned the noise in this video is mostly just that, noise, the camera distorts the sound real bad at times. But I did get it to run hot enough to 'melt' a disc brake rotor! That actually was an accident, but it was cool to see that the furnace could get that hot. This furnace has run it's course, as the liner I made has been disintegrated from my abusive testing. V 4.0 is next, when I scrounge a 55gal drum or similar. I plan on building a heat exchanger for it. Maybe two, 1 for heating air, and one for heating water. Later I hope to make an exchanger to do both.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHEhUXs7_xs This one is of my compressor, on it's maiden run. Only pumped up to about 80psi. It doesn't have much for cfm, but it will pump up your tire! ;-) Again the sound isn't what you'd hear if you actually watched it run in person.
Yes I'm making my own hydrogen, well it's a hydrogen/oxygen gas mixed with a few other impurities. But it will run an engine nicely as far as I can tell so far. Sorry no pic's or videos on this one yet, but they should be coming in the weeks ahead. My "Hydrogen Reactor", (I coined that because there is a reaction to chemicals that make the gas), well the current version, can contain 80psi of pressure easily. Now I'm working on a way to control the flow to the engines breather. So I'm basically trying to come up with a throttle for it.
I've got more videos posted if you want to check them out. Just click on my YouTube user name, sbrad762, and you should be able to see them all, if you want
Oh, as for building the furnace, it's pretty simple. The outer shell is just a 5gal metal bucket, with a hole for the blower and fuel line to go in, The hole in the bottom is in case the crucible melts, so the contents will be able pour out instead of plugging the blower hole. The liner is just a cement made from using 1.5 parts Portland cement, 2 parts sand, and 2 parts Perilite. It actually impressed me as to how well it holds up.
Like I mentioned, the furnace runs on used motor oil, but can run on used cooking oil, kerosene, diesel fuel, or even wood, or charcoal. When it's warmed up and running right it burns 100% of the fuel, so there's no pollution, or so 'THEY' say.
I've actually migrated to Ubuntu 9.1 and am growing to like it. Took awhile to wean myself from my old Win98 se, but it was getting to the point that nothing would work on the old dinosaur. I still use Mrs. Bob's laptop w/Vista on it, but only in rare cases.
From what I saw of the way things went, you did get alot of undo abuse from people. I think alot of people resented the 'Peer Mod' concept, and never tried to give it a chance. But that's kids for ya. They seemed to have a negative attitude about it from the get go.
Anyway, I'm glad that you are alive and still kickin'.
Let me know what you think of the videos, ( I know they are weak as far as the camera man goes).
I am typing this right now from Kubuntu, 9.10.
Which was an Ubuntu install, with the Kubuntu stuff installed over that, because I wondered what the difference would be.
I have the new Kubuntu 10.04 installed on the other hard drive.
Forget that dual boot stuff, I just change the controller cable from one to the other, hard drive, (With the machine turned off, of course.), to change from one to the other.
So far, I am more impressed with the 'features' in 10.04 than I am with 9.10 But am happier with 9.10
I am having plenty of trouble with both. Things like the fact that my monitor turns off after 5 minutes of inactivity, regardless of the fact that I have all of the power saving features turned off, and I have screensaver turned off, etc. IOW: Everything that, in windows, would be turning my monitor is off... Is itself turned off in Kubuntu 9.10 and 10.04. Yet it continues to turn off.
I have posted about it at the forums, and gotten zero replies. I have posted about other problems as well, and have never gotten a reply, (except to the very most simple of problems.), that actually addressed the issue.
Most answers fall along the lines of "change to this other OS", "upgrade that program, so you can find out what other program to use, to find out what other program you can use to find out what the problem might possibly be"... (All involving hundreds of megabytes of downloads)
Or "you can't get there from here. It's not supported", (When others are doing it as a matter of course...)
Or, "Input this chicken scratch gobbledeygook to find another few lines of chicken scratch gobbledeygook, which will tell you what other chicken scratch gobbledeygook you will have to input, to either fix the problem, or tell you to input even MORE chicken scratch gobbledeygook, or tell you why you can't do it". Nevermind they don't tell you WHERE or how to put in the chicken scratches, or even WHY. If I understood where and most importantly, WHY... I might be able to figure it out for myself, later on, when I have other problems.
So, so far I have had to figure out the soultions mostly on my own. And some things I simply haven't figured out yet.
I am slowly learning, and some day will understand all the wheres and whys of the chicken scratch stuff. (If I don't give up and go back to XP.)
Of the two, 9.10 is more stable. But it is having enough troubles that I am feeling like I can't really rely on it not to kakk and lose all my stuff again.
10.04 loses my address book, etc, in "claws" email, every time the computer is shut down... Start it back up, and I have to start all over again from scratch with the email program. Give it all the email server information, re-fill the address book, re-find all the emails, from this drive... Etc.
I have lost a LOT of emails. People no doubt think I have been ignoring them. I lost emails when xp kakked. Twice. (Because the computer kakked it.) (Which is what convinced me to finally try Ubuntu.)
Thunderbird is much more stable in the Ubuntus. But I don't like the way it 'calls home' regardless of what settings you make in the program.**
I'll head to the library to download the 10.04 final, when they say it is finally stable.
Today I will be backing up an ancient sony viao laptop, then wiping it and trying linux mint on it.
If that turns out bad, I'll wipe it again, install Ubuntu, (without the Kde. LOL) 9.10 on it and call it a day.
Still can't make copies of DVDs. Even though I own the dvds. (Just want backup copies in case they get scratched too badly, or dropped and broken, etc.)
**Something that I have noticed. A fundamental difference between linux people, and windows people.
If windows people know that a program, (Thunderbird, for instance), is 'calling home', (Even if only for updates. I want to be the one who decides on an update, NOT the program !) they get all up in arms. It's malware, adware, spyware, etc...
But linux people.. Ho-hum. It's par for the course.
EVERYTHING on the linux system seems to call home. Constantly. Even if, like I did with Thunderbird... You have all the update stuff turned OFF.
Even if I weren't miffed that things are deciding FOR me, what gets updated/changed, and what doesn't... It's using up a LOT of my capped bandwidth.
There is a central "wallet" that captures and collects ANY information that you put on your computer, or that just passes through. Passwords, personal information, etc... And seems to freely share that info not only with any other program on the computer, but with anyone outside your computer that requests it.
IRC chat, And a bunch of other VERY insecure internet connections... Are all installed, turned on, and connected, by default.
Like I said, a world of difference between linux people and windows people.
Windows people are aware of 'malware'. Whether they actually DO anything about it, or not.
Linux people claim they are immune. But the reality is more a matter of, they are either unaware of what is going on 'behind their backs', (Not just the calling home, bit.), or they simply do not care.
This post is already too long, I'll continue in the next one.
The bike thing may get changed yet again. It'll be a work in progress for a while.
I may eventually turn the scooter into a pusher, instead of friction drive.
I can't yet watch the utube videos. With so much else 'open' on this OS, I have not yet been able to bring myself to install one of the worst offenders in webdom.. Adobe flash. LOL
Someday...
Thinking once I figure out the OS enough to get a good stable install, then I'll turn to learning about the firewalls, antiviruses, etc, that are available for linux boxes.
Until then, it's 'wipe out and test, wipe out and test, wipe out and test'. LOL
I guess the upside to this is that once I am proficient enough to do this on my own, I'll be able to help others, who otherwise would be completely lost.
~~~
Dude, I'd like to invite you to use quittintime as a sort of 'blog', for all this experimental stuff that you are doing.
You can start a thread here, and use it to 'keep notes', in a way. Upload pics. Record progress. Etc.
And we can all keep up as well. Give you ridiculously imcompetant advice, ask inanely stupid questions, etc. LOL
If you'd like I can even create a sub-section, like the 'shout' is a sub-section to the back porch...
Call it "Hillbilly Engeneering", or "Stretch Your Mind", or something like that.
It's a serious offer, and one that I am sure the 'owners' of quittintime would heartily agree with.
With a sub-section, maybe others will also post their off the wall, or hillbilly engeneering efforts.
And the threads/posts won't get lost by getting mixed in with the general chat stuff.

Man!
You have dove into linux world way deeper than me.
I installed an earlier version of Unbuntu, and upgraded to 9.0. Actually I wish I hadn't, but I'm getting by. My biggest problem is that the upgrade kinda slowed down the system. As far as the calling home deal and automatically updating,... Well it took me sometime, but for the most part, it will ask me occasionally, but I can stop it. Sorry I'll have to piddle around some and see if I can figure out what I did.
I don't use Thunderbird, so I can't help you there. I have stuck to web mail for years, just because it is easier to avoid virus' and such.
I did the same method of switching over as you. First I downloaded and burned the basic OS, then shut down and switched hard drives, booted up on the CD and it was a smooth deal after that. I can still go back to my old op system if I feel the need, but as of yet, I'm cool.
It took me some time and work, but I'm pretty used to what I got now, and I can add anything I need for free, compared to MS wanting to charge for every piece of software, Those guys give very little away.
Anyway I'll see if I can find something to help you out some, but I expect that most I come up with, you'll have already been there, tried that.
I took me 2-3 years to gut up, and try this change. It is a PITA, but I guess that comes with the territory.

I appreciate the offer, and I may take you up on it. But for right now, I'm compiling stuff, and sharing it in a couple of places, but not really all of it, yet.
Between me, you, and those who are watching here, I'll let you in on a little secret that only 1 or 2 others may know about.
Me and Pedrothemule are actually working on getting a sight up and going for people to follow, and contribute to. We haven't told anybody online yet, as we don't want ten tons of advice on how to do it. We want to get it going, and working fairly well, then invite some fellow enthusiasts to help work on it some before it is released.
We'd probably be close to opening it up to the mass' by now, but the old mule has been swamped at his real job, and is just now getting time to setup his end, (A couple of servers, and getting the website software up and running.)
Now with that said, once we see how that is going to work, I'll be working other sites/forums with projects and ideas, to help draw people to the site. So I may be able to take you up on the offer then. And I might even be able to help increase traffic here.
We're not out to take people from other sites, just want to set up a do it yerself type site that covers anything and everything to do with living on the cheap, In any, way, shape or form, a person can come up with.
It'll kinda be a cross between this site: http://www.instructables.com/ http://www.instructables.com/id/4-different-roasters/ That last link is one I posted there about a year ago.
Anyway, a cross between that site , what BT used to be, and a few others. But there will be no harassing or arguing tolerated. No politics, or religion either. The worst one can give is constructive advice, or point out problems that one has already encountered.
Like I said before, this is still hush hush online, but I trust you to keep it on the low side for now or I wouldn't be telling you. :-)
It's not a super secret, but we don't want fools out there judging it before they can actually see it.
Again, thanks very much for the offer, and like I said, in a few months or less I may take you up on it.

VERY cool !!
You and Jerry both have my email address, so keep me informed. (And hopefully those emails will not get lost in the continueum. LOL)
And let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
The offer will stand open, here. All it can do is to add to what we have.

I get a bit OCD when it comes to something like learning this new OS.
I want to know all I can. I am addicted to learning.
Before it is all over, I will probably have broken it on purpose a hundred times, just to fix it. Best way to learn.
Right now, though, I am just trying to learn what I need to know to get by.
The biggest problem is not, not getting real answers on a forum... I can actually eventually figure it all out, on my own. (With all the other online resources, you can usually find a fix, just by searching the web and reading. As long as you can search, and can read/interpret instructions, you can eventually get it figured out.)
The problem is that doing so, requires so much of my broadband cap amount.
By the end of today, I will either have to get offline, and stay offline, or I will have to pay 25 cents for each megabyte over the cap that I use.
That can get expensive. All to fix and get running... a "free" OS. LOL
~~~
I have always used a third party email program. I used Eudora for many years.
I don't like the idea of tons of my emails sitting forever on someone else's server. And them thinking they can do whatever they want with them, because they "own" them...
~~~
The laptop is so freaking slow, it may take days to get it backed up. It's taken 20 minutes to install the backup program, and still hasn't finished.

Cold and rainy here, today. Won't be doing anything outside.
I found a very small, and free "clone" program for windows.
It's called WinDD.
It is only 180k download.
Running it right now, on the laptop. Little less than 25% done.
I'll let you know how it turns out, when it finishes.

No flack, no nothing. They just pulled the posts I had made, even the explanation. Sad they pulled the one pointing out their lack of moderation.
It's comical the difference between then and now. Before-massive moderation, member mods and customer service excuses. Now? hardly a peep. Yin/Yang I guess.

Re: WinDD
First the good news.
It did make a perfect clone.
The bad news is that it completely wiped out the hard drive I cloned it TO.
There is nothing anywhere, that tells you that it will wipe out the destination drive.
I thought it would just add the clone to what was already on the hard drive. There was scads of space for it. Could have done it a couple dozen times and still not filled up the space.
I had a LOT of irreplaceable data on that hard drive, and so far have not found a way to get it back.
Bottom line, if you want to clone a hard drive this program does it. And does so very quickly.
And at only 180k download !
Just be sure there is nothing on the destination drive that you want to keep.

It always sucks to loose valuable data!
I take it that none was backed up. This is were I should be lecturing you about backups. But you've already suffered enough. And I've been in the same boat too.
I have about 6 hard drives that work right now, Usually I keep one or 2 just for my backups, the rest are for the day to day stuff, and for testing.
I can't help ya get your data back, But I can easily spare one HD for you so you'll have one just for backups. That'll help in the future, if you want. They ain't big ones, but plenty big enough for backing up data.
Also it might have helped if you'd partitioned the HD into 2 or more HD's. But if the data was already on in before you partition it, that data would get gone too.
Lemme know if you want one, I can ship it to you for $5 total, and it should be there in 3-4 days. I just got a package from Bill Wicklund, (PlumbBill). it only took 3 days.
Anyway, I feel your pain dude. learning can suck sometimes! Don't let it get ya down.

The drive is an external 500 gigabyte hard drive.
And it WAS the backup.
An awful lot of data on that disk that is nowhere else.
I was keeping it as a sort of vault, while I used my other two hard drives for wiping, then installing and checking out the different distros.
I decided to wipe the laptop because it literally takes more than ten minutes to start up, and then you wait forever for it to do anything, once it is running. (No, it isn't chock full of startup programs, etc. It was pretty clean.)
I didn't have anything else available that was big enough to contain a clone of the laptop.
And I thought the clone program would just make the clone like a backup, IOW, added to the data already on the external HD.
My bad. Never ASSUME anything of the sort.
I DO consider the lack of warning that the program will wipe, and repartion the destination drive... To be pitiful.
Considering the number of people who will have to learn the way that I did, and the possible value of all the lost data, it's almost, in a way, criminal negligence not to give a warning about that, anywhere and everywhere that the program is available.
At the VERY least.. Not in any way 'professional'.
~~~
Now, what I have tried...
I tried GParted.
I tried TestDisk.
No joy.
What is running right now, is "PhotoRec".
It is isntalled automatically when you download and install TestDisk.
It LOOKS like it may be sorting out and recovering at least most of the lost data.
We'll see.
It could, of course, just be "Sorting out and recovering" the clone that was put on there. LOL
It's going to take a few hours. Maybe all day and part of the night.
When it is finished, I'll let you know how well it worked.
If it works, then I'll type up a short tutorial on using the program to recover data from any hard drives you may want to use it on.
It's fairly simple, but like anything else that you do in Ubuntu, if you have to go to the command line, it gets pretty arcane.
And the descriptions they give of the programs don't really help much when it comes to running the program.
Mostly because they tend to assume that you already know a bunch of stuff. It's like expecting a kindergarten kid to already understand how to obtain the circumference of a circle, when you walk them through pi.
~~
As for the hard drive...
Thank you kindly, but it's not necessary.
My backups have gotten so large that anything under 60 gigs for backup, has become almost a joke.
I have two internal hard drives. The smallest of which is 160 gigs.
And the external.
I was playing with both of the internals, and made the bad decision not to use one of those for the clone, because I didn't want to wipe out one of my test distros.
Next time I'll think twice before trying something new with my backup disk.
Had I partitioned the external, it wouldn't have made any difference. All partitionas would have been lost.
Thanks again dude.
I'm not giving up yet.
And if this works, it will prove to be an invaluable tool to have and share.
Hi Huck.
The former sounds like a problem with cookies.
Have you told the forum to remember you, ? Do you use session cookies ?
Are you seeing the "cannot" message in an area where posting is 'locked' ?
As for the latter...
If you go back out to the category, (for instance, this thread is located in the "your shout" category...
Scroll to the top of the page, and you will see:
"Post" "Previous" "Index" "Next" Etc...
Click on "Post" to start a new thread.
There's a line that has POST in it-click on that.
A new thread box will come up where you can place the title and then body of your message.
Why you're getting the messages................I'm at a loss.
A couple of updates here.
I am running Linux Mint, and liking it.
Been running it for a while now. Haven't gone back to Ubuntu. It ran, right out of the box. No installing a bunch of stuff, looking for codecs, drivers, programs, etc.
If I recommend Linux to others at all, especially people who have never used it before... I will be recommending Linux Mint.
Pop in the disc, choose to install, and you will be up and running in a fraction of the time it takes windows to install.
And as I said, everything works, right out of the box. With windows I have to go looking for drivers. With Mint, everything already works !
I have a newer laptop.
Sort of a birthday present to myself. (I turn 53 on the 21st.)
It is only about 5 years old. The old one was more than 11 years old.
The old one finally kakked. Or at least close enough to it that it simply wasn't worth investing anything more, in.
I had to replace the hard drive and optical drive on the newer one, but since then, it has worked beautifully.
Had I had this one, to take with me on trips, (like the trips to the fests), I would never have been without a computer or internet. It's amazing all the different ways this thing can connect to the internet. And in so many places !!
It is a Toshiba Tecra A4-S313
The one thing I still really need to get for it is a 12v power supply. (The laptop is 15v. I am talking about the power supply that plugs in the 12v cigarette lighter in the car.)
I don't want a universal type. I used one of those on the sony. I am positive that that power supply played a big part in the demise of that laptop.
I want to get one that was actually made for this particular laptop.
To all:
Now, the real reason I was drawn back in here to post again.
The whole deal with Breaktime, and what happened before I walked away.
.
I, you... All of us... We are all responsible for our own actions.
And our own REactions.
"Now look what you made me do", is NOT an excuse for having a bad reaction to someone.
You can ALWAYS just walk away.
I either forgot that fact, or ignored it, because I wanted to help and to make a difference.
I should have kept to it.
I should have been paying more attention to my own actions and reactions.
Toward the end, I was reacting, (and acting), very badly.
I became an arse, both behind the scenes, and out where anyone could see.
I made bad decisions. Again, both behind the scenes, and out in the open.
I became ridgid. Controlling. And angry.
I even quit for the wrong reasons.
But once I was away for a while, and had time to think and recuperate, I began to see just how wrong I was. And for how long...
I guess the real reason I am posting is to communicate the fact that I know I was wrong many times, in many ways. And that I am not walking around angry, resentful, or blaming anyone other than myself.
I hope that I am among friends here, and that what is past, is past.
Glad you are up and running!!!
I've had a few people recommend the "Mint" version. I might give it a try here soon.
BossHog has given you an HBD shout at BTC: http://forums.delphiforums.com/breaktimeclass/messages?msg=2006.1
Not sure if you'll go there, but I figured I'd mention it.
Have you been back to the old Break time any? I go there on occasion, but not as much as before the change.
I lost my logins to all those places, when I switched to linux.
Not really ready yet, to get started again.
Please tell Ron I said thank you.
=0)
Looks like there's going to be a good fest this year.
Wish I still had some good pics of Rez. I'd have a go at trying to make up a logo.
I had an idea for one that I thought Rez himself would approve of, but I lost all the pics I had.
