OK--you are saying the following:

1. The picture is pretty close to lifesize
2. It was taken in warm weather, and by implication it was taken outdoors.
3. You said no rain or snow.

That makes it look like a picture of the ground.

But, what are those craters?

I am guessing the aftermath of a hailstorm onto loose dirt.

Turning into a deductive reasoning thing. Good job filtering through the sort of clues that have been left. However, it's not impressions in dirt and I've never been to yellowstone.

edit: Not mud neither.

No, not that. You are from an older country than I, so maybe it does look like that. Put it this way. The pic IS of something no doubt very old.

While I was in college, I worked maintenance in a big hotel.

Real maintenance, fixing things, not cleanup.

One day I got a call from housekeeping. Dood tried his best to convince me that since my title was maintenance, I was supposed to do cleanup.

Reason he tried... In the corner, near the door of one of the main floor restrooms, was a pile that looked identical to your pic. Only it was more brown...

Seriously. Looked just like it.

Also have seen boiling mud before. Looks just like this.

These are the only things I have seen that look like this, therefore, my guesses.

Good guesses from both you and mark, but nope. I'll let this run a bit more in hopes someone will run into the answer. After a rocky start, there seems to be some interest.

Well, I'll tell her of your guess (you'd better duck) and there ain't no rye that looks like that buddy.

A river runs through it.

Well sir, it's none of the above exactly that I know of. No ball bird, nor butt. I suppose the jig is up. As it could be a meteorite..............but at this time it is a portion of the bottom (rock) of the Maumee River. Alot of the bottom is I think Limestone as that's a predominant bedrock around here. I would have thought that someone here would have guessed a shot at the moon, but no sir. You have certainly come the closest I think and who knows, this 1 foot section of river bottom may have been something that fell from the sky. Much of the visible bottom is flat without the texture of this shot. Here's the area it comes from, picture taken during one of our river cleanups.

I'm telling you it's boiled mud.

It may be the river bottom rock now, but at some time in the far distant past, it was boiling mud.

Is it at a play ground? The finished curb at the upper right hand corner tells me it was made on purpose.
OR..........
Is this a bag of Quick Crete you had left over from your last deck job that you just tore the paper off of?
No couldn't be that or there would be a butt imprint in it from when you sat on it at lunchtime.
OK Cal it is time for some clues

Bob,

Read again. He gave us the ultimate clue. He told us what it was.
