Finish for a cutting board
      #6956 - Sun Jul 27 2003 04:21 PM

Hi Guys,

What kind of finish does one put on a kitchen cutting board?

I have a couple of old slide-out cutting boards in my kitchen cabinets. Any finish that might have been on them is long since worn away. It seems that without a finish on them, mold or mildew or whatever would get into the wood and grow....But would a knife used on it just cut through the finish and expose the wood anyway?

What is usually done in this situation?

(I have limited access to the internet, so if I do not respond promptly, I apologize. I am not ignoring anyone.)

Thanks.

Sawdaddy,
Plain unscented mineral oil works great. Wipe on, wipe off. Restoration Hardware sells a lemon oil for cutting boards also but I haven't tried it.

I'll second the mineral oil, good safe finish that can be re-applied as necessary.

I'll third on the mineral oil.

But my favorite cutting board finish is half and half mineral oil, and beeswax.

I get real, pure beeswax from a beekeeper. Carefully melt it, and mix it half and half with common mineral oil. Mix well, while hot. Keep the heat on, on low for a short while.

Stir it often while it is cooling, to make sure it cools still mixed.

I built a kitchen table once, made up a large batch of this for their table, and gave it to them as a gift. (They wanted this sort of finish on the table, instead of poly, or varnish, or anything like that. Just plain old pine, and a non-toxic finish of this sort.)

I got as many raves about the finish gift, as I did about the table. They used it on EVERYTHING. I also sold a bunch of batches of the stuff to their friends...

Thanks for the input guys. I'll go with the mineral oil.

I'd like to try out that beeswax finish of yours sometime too Luka. However, I have a bad case of lazy right now from working 12 hour days so I'm goin' with the easy way this time.

Thanks again.
