I was looking at your web site--mighty nicely done.
I was really intrigued by your cattail railing. It reminds me of a Scandinavian railing system, using flat boards instead of spindles. They too often have decorative cutouts in the boards.
Have you had any troubles with breaking of the boards? Some of those cutouts have awfully long cantilevers, and one good whack by a 6-year-old's truck might seem to break it.
That said, I would like do be doing something similar. Only in my case I would like to have a musical score. I have it all figured out with one exception--How do I distinguish between half-notes and quarter notes? As you probably know, they look the same in shape, except in print a half-note is an open oval with a stem on it, and the quarter-note is the same shape, but with the oval filled in black.

John,
Thanks for checking out my website. just received word from the designer that the site should be up cleaned up and finished next week.
I have never had a problem with the cattail railings cracking or breaking. I don?t know how well they would hold up to a little kids demolition derby but the first set we built went in a high use summer camp occupied by more than the normal amount of drunken guests. Fifteen years later it?s still standing. They are more durable than first appears as some of the bigger opening actually have small webs stiffening up the thinner sections.
A little tip. I sawed the boards in half then cut the insides out on the band saw and sanded the edges then after everything was cleaned up I glued the sections back together and cleaned up the joints. Also be sure to leave room between the panels to allow for seasonal expansion.

Thanks for the information. Maybe if I become a Yuper I will have you do some work for me.
Any thoughts on making quarter and half notes?

John,
I might be able to come up with an idea for your musical theme however my knowledge of music is limited to the toots after a bowl of good chile. Could you post a picture of the notes you have in mind?

JohnD,
How large would these notes be? If they are big enough, couldn't you cut the center of the half-note out, and leave the quarter-note full? Now if yoou could somehow make a treble clef work....now that would be neat!
Later.
