How about a winter photo thread
      #4823 - Mon Jan 27 2003 03:04 AM Attachment (194 downloads)

How about a winter photo thread. I?ll start out with some shots taken this afternoon. I know you southerners like to cry about the snow but around here it?s the norm and you just live with it, most of us even get to enjoy the stuff. For all you guys who are not familiar with the area this is the UP, as in Upper Peninsula of Michigan, land of perpetual snows. Although this season it started late, prior to January 3rd. we had next to nothing on the ground. Since then it has snowed everyday almost none stop. The snow tends to be the localized, lake effect, dump everything in one place kind of storms. Fifteen miles south and west of me they have a dusting or bare ground. Going east for 50 miles there is a healthy dumping and to the north is 125 miles of open water to Canada.

The snow just keeps coming.

Man Armin- that's some snow. I like your idea of a snowblower "more power". The picture of the wood shed is my favorite. It was a balmy 55 degrees here today.

Man Armin, you need to put your snowshoes on tonight to BBQ those burgs. Looks like you better get a roof over that thing.
Here's some I shot last year.

Hi Armin, I cant even begin to understand how you live, work and get around in those comditions year after year.

when we were in the USA for a holiday we went to Flagstaff where it was snowing heavily, there were cars run of the road, people slippin' and sliding going to the supermarket, nearly getting run over by snow ploughs spurtin' out black stuff on the road, it sure was an eye opener.
Down here its bush fire season, we just had our second hottest day on record 44.6 deg celcius.
So wrap up Armin and stay safe.
Cheers John

When I talked with you about a winter photo fest a few weeks ago I had no idea you would overwhelm me with the volume of the white stuff you folks get up there. Eventho it may be late to arrive and maybe spotty according to the proximity to the lake, you got your share.

Looks beautiful.

I can't compete, but here's a little from your southern neighbor.

This was the first snow of the season. Heavy and wet, had to do some tree trimming up the drive as the trees with leaves still on did some serious bending. It's too bad. I like a green canopy over the drive.

John, this'll cool you off. We haven't been above freezing in over 2 weeks. Seems Armin forgot to close the door up there. Been a straight shot cold blast from up above him all the way to Florida.

Calvin,
We might get more snow than you guys but the wet heavy stuff you guys get does far more damage not to mention tough to drive in. I remember living in Detroit and having to fight the slop on the roads, branches down and power outages. Our biggest problem is wind, the snow is dry and fluffy, whiteouts are common and I'm talking zero visibility turning a drive home from work into a white knuckle run.

Armin, you haven't lived till you drive with the yahoo's in that first qtr. inch snow of the year. If it wasn't dangerous it would almost be comical.

John,
It's like everything else, if you live in a place long enough the weather becomes the norm and you just deal with it. Most people up here know how to drive in the snow stay home when it's bad. Tourist and newbee's are usually the ones in the ditch. I'm the last place on the road leading into Pictured Rocks NL so when somebody gets stuck I'm the first driveway they see. If I'm home I'll go get them out. It amazes me to no end how far some of these people get before they get buried to the point of no return, then it's a 4 mile walk to my place. One guy showed up at my door at 12:30 am half froze to death with a pregnant wife and sister back in the jeep. I'll be forever gratefull she decided not to go into labor while I was around.

Living in snow country does have an up side. Winter weather can create some spectacular special effects.
Photo below was taken on Grand Island in Munising bay; the island is about 3/4 mile off shore and consists of limestone cliffs up to 200 ft. high. Surface water seeps out of the rock forming ice caves. The caves face south and under the right light conditions give one the impression of walking through a glass crystal house.
