Thanks, Calvin :) [Re: calvin]

We had a great trip down to FL. We left CO pretty much "in the dust" which I mean literally. There was so much dust caused by drought, our lab would make dust clouds when he walked in the clearing. There would always be a layer of dust on everything in the house. I just found out (from a Taunton participant) that there was a fire at Mesa Verde National Park three days after we left...We lived 7 miles from MVNP. From all angles, it looks like we left at the right time.

Our animals were very well behaved on the way down. Moab (our springer) was the perfect passenger (he rode with me). He never whined once. When we'd pull into gas stations, he hopped into the driver's seat and sometimes he'd honk the horn with his butt. I got a couple of sneers because other gas station customers thought I was honking at them but when I'd point to the dog, they'd laugh. Sam, our toothless cat, spent most of his trip between the armrest and my leg. He's so mellow, he barely spent any time in a carrier. When we had to stop anyplace, almost on cue, he'd duck under the passenger seat. We spent one night in a motel after telling the desk clerk we had two dogs - then sneaked in the 4 cats (and their litter box). They aren't dirty or noisy and no harm was done to the room. We spent the second night in a security rest stop sleeping in our vehicles. Rest stop bathroom was huge and damned clean!

Restaurants are falling over themselves to hire Hubby but if I ran naked down US19, I couldn't scare up a bit of attention toward my secretarial skills. Today at an agency, I timed 97 words per minute - and got the "we'll be in touch" schpiel from the agency rep. I have 21 years' experience on Wall Street. For crying out loud, what the heck do people need in a secretary that I don't have???! Whine over.

Daughter is enjoying the pool very much and has taken an interest in diving and in the swim team at school. We're still unpacking but it's liveable now. Our "outside" cats are now "inside" cats because there's a lot more traffic on our new street than there was on our old one in CO. They wouldn't last a week outside. They're adjusting and being lazy most of the day.

It's great to be back here on the board and I can't wait to have my kitchen in order so I can do some SERIOUS cooking. I know I've asked for more than my share of good wishes, but if you can spare a little "good job hunting mojo," please toss it my way. Hugs to you all

Job hunting... [Re: kai]
      #3139 - Wed Aug 14 2002 07:09 AM

The scary thing is that I heard this AM American Airlines is laying off 7000 people. Hubby then told me IBM was laying off 15000. It's definitely an employer's market - when so many people are looking for work, no one gets what they deserve and settles for slave wages.

If I can't find an office job this week, I'm going to look for restaurant work. I wanted an office job because of the benefits which are rarely offered in restaurant work.

Hope you are doing OK..

No kidding re looking for restaurant work. Bro did tile work for the Cohen Group who has 6?7?8? very successful restaurants nearby; Mrs. Cohen recognized him when we dined at one of the places on Mother's Day--she was a greeter! Wonder how much a dishwasher is expected to lift? Aargh.

I'm also contemplating working in a cat shelter or wildlife refuge--in whatever category--thinking that travel time/direction/distance will help make up for lack of $.

Didn't get the job I interviewed for, but that's ok--their cubes were like the size of two refrigerators. I think (know) I screwed up by telling the HR person (first interviewer) how much I made when she asked. I should have waited and said "I'll tell you if, after all the other interviews (another 5), you all decide I fit the position." DUH This is what happens if one hasn't been in the interviewee mode for years! Like Cissy says, "Take my advice, I'm not using it." Oh well, it was only about a 10-second shorter commute ;-)

If the world doesn't blow up, I think the economy will turn around in 5 yrs or so. Good thing I'm used to beer budget!

Looking f/w to all your tales :-)

Intimidating Incomes... [Re: kai]
      #3154 - Thu Aug 15 2002 09:14 AM

Several of the few employment agents for this area were honest when they told me that an employer would opt for a "local" who's been used to making crap money vs. someone like me who types 100 wpm and made pretty fat bucks in a "former" life. I find this to be utterly amazing. Don't these people (the employers) know that WE KNOW where we are???? I don't think ANYONE (short of a brain surgeon) expects to make northeast money in a southeast city. That's part of the reality of a lower cost of living being commensurate with lower salaries.

I interviewed for a position and I should hear today or tomorrow. They seemed pretty excited but you never know, someone who types half of my speed and is willing to work for dollars less on the hour than I am - may slink in during the last 48 hours.

Ever notice that when it's an "Employer's" market, life just sucks? Hard work for pennies instead of what someone's worth? Belts tightening all over the place? People working themselves to death without the extra money to even enjoy their weekends? Ever notice that when it's an "Employee's" market, it's pretty positive all the way around? People are out there, spending money, enjoying all the "extras" and the suppliers of those "extras" are making money. People doing honest work for a day's decent pay. Good old 43 - snatches crud out of the jaws of plenty.

Excellent points, Chiff, which is why we must never be the first to mention $. (Kai, are you listening?) I'd actually take a 50% cut for better conditions, but am resigned that I may have to take that cut, or more, for worse conditions.

Yes, the spending has stopped for most folks I know. Of course, emergencies never cease.

Right on re employer v. employee market--one additional thing, the greedy folks in power never suffer in either case, well, rarely suffer (get caught or punished). Don't get how these peeps/perps sleep at night.

What's the 43? DC?

P.S. I think someone at CT has designated you as the cooking maven or equivalent at this site. You may be seeing more old friends here :-)

Hope you get good news re your interviews. Regardless, keep that resume up-to-date and try to find some new technology, terms or whatever to learn. I am astounded at the skills I amassed the last 6 yrs.

Who is 43... [Re: kai]
      #3162 - Fri Aug 16 2002 10:37 AM

Dubya. 41 was dad.

I'm telling you - I can't even look at him without remembering the recent Robin Williams stand-up I saw on TV. He imitated Bush talking about the economy or something and it went like this...

"The economy is strong now...ohhhhh, look at the kitty!"

Now, whenever Dave and I want to demonstrate a severe lapse in senses, we say, "look at the kitty."
