Censorship
      #13073 - Sun Sep 26 2010 02:36 PM

I think it interesting that there has been and continues to be discussions (?) about censorship of posters on the other two alternative BT forums.

We ran into this here most notably during the BT outcast-ing.

Funny, what was deemed wrong here, yet generated so much anti feelings, is now being experienced on the other boards. While the degrees of what's allowed in print is different-there's still quite a difference of opinion.

I've missed out on visiting Jim's site-an offshoot of BTC-so I don't know how it's fared there.

And perhaps the most interesting thing about all of this-there's been none lately and very little early on at Breaktime.

Better yet, can't blame it on Bob-he's on non of them that I know of.

And the beat goes on.

A couple days ago there was a couple of threads pulled over at the Classic. Folks began asking as usual, what's going on. Now Dino is busy so the response wasn't immediate-which I'm sure miffed some, but for the most part the response and questions were pretty tame compared to the way they've been here and on the couple other forums that are visited.

I find it interesting because of all that transpired over at the old BT. Further, what showed up here when threads were pulled and the bannings took place at BT, was pretty heated. So vengeful in fact we had a couple folks leave here because they didn't want to abide by the simple rules of decency, common sense and a modicum of decorum.

Early on the Classic set down the rules of no politics. This seems to be what might have set this recent action off. Still, whole thread pulling to weed out some posts that don't stay in tune with the protocol seems ill advised. Afterall, it's what soured many when it was done at BT. Throw a couple bannings in the mix and it sounds all too familiar.

(EDIT: And that is the odd thing.............there was no politics that I can remember, only a welcome back to Colleen. Now as shown below, there's no love lost between Dino and Splinter. That was made visible here pretty clearly and was one of the things we tried to throw cold water on.)

At least there was some reasoning given, unlike the silence of the moderators at Breaktime-man, that used to irk the daylights outta me. No one to ask, no communication, no reasoning. Admittedly, you don't have to answer, but it sure makes life a little more open.

Here's the response and reasons given:

I am not going to fuel the fire by entering into an interminable discussion of this. However, for the record:

Splintergroupie was one of the three most abusive and incorrigible members of the old BT at Taunton, and has a history of creating new user IDs everytime she was banned there and coming back to spam the board with her invective and anger. She was probably 80% responsible for 'the big putsch' over there when Taunton upper management came down on JP like the wrath of Odin, and large numbers of innocent bystanders got banned. I will not tolerate her acting in the same way here; I also do not have the time or desire to manage the kind of trouble she can cause. And this incident, coming within 24 hours of her reappearance, should be ample demostration of just how much trouble that is.

It is quite true that I don't like her; but there are a number of people here I do not like and I do not ban them because of that. If she had behaved in accordance with the rules that everyone else has followed with good enough grace, she would still have posting privileges no matter what I think of her personally. This is not a personal vendetta; it is a management decision.

She has been gagged, and will remain gagged. Paul B in CT has been banned because of his spamming the board last night.

That is the end of my statement. And now I have supper to cook, a driveway to shovel out, and a union meeting to attend.

Happy Holidays Cal!
Hope Life is Good on Your end!
Dino's got his hands full, I would guess running that place. Thankless job, would be hard to please all the people all the time. Right or wrong, it's his gig.
I myself would have more of an open door, but that's me.
I just lurk there from time to time, lost my given password over there, tried to get another one, but never heard back.
The other place the "Backroom" Andy C the # 2 guy been MIA since SG got the Boot over there.
Connection?

Oh man, the Holidaze...............fast approaching the big day. Our now one y.o. grandson will be up here. We have a new victim to spoil.

I guess I didn't realize A.C. had vacated. I did catch a bit of Splinter's run in with Jerrald. Things are never simple, are they.

Here's my uneducated opinion on the current events. Like here where we have the magic button to deep six anything (now, not much to use it on), so do the owners/moderators at the other sites. Knowing when and how much to use it is the hard part.

There's many personalities on the web. Some folks are very passionate about things. Some could give a damn. Then there's those that are just plain #%!&*^$ 'd up. And of course, all those in between. Moderating a site IS a lot like herding cats.

Merry Christmas and hope for a Happy New Year to you.

As a number of you may have noticed, BTC is currently undergoing nasty troll attacks by a former member (PaulBinCT) who got himself banned for spamming the board. He has been creating numerous fake user names, changing IP addresses, spoofing e-mail addresses, and generally being a real pain in the ass.

As many of you may never have seen the whole extent of his trolling, I am going to post a partial list of the threads we've had to delete so that you'll understand I am not exaggerating the problem:

...And that is just the ones that we caught. Delphi's admin people are now involved and eventually Paul will be tracked down and what happens then I do not know, but I wouldn't want to be in his shoes when it does. I know what happened to 'Larry' when Prospero tracked him down after he spammed the old Taunton BT, and it involved numerous lawyers and other unsympathetic folk....

But in the meantime, this crap cannot go on; it takes too much time and effort and is a real bore.

So, at the suggestion of Delphi admin, I am putting BTC on 'Moderation.' What this means is that ALL messages will be held for approval before being posted to the message board, except those from members who have been granted 'Voice' (which will appear immediately as usual).

I cannot 'grant voice' to all our members individually; there are close to 2000 of us. The only practical way to do this is to use the '30-day post' grouping function provided by Delphi, and catch up on any people we missed later on, one at a time.

All members who have posted messages in the last 30 days (with the exception of those currently on probation or who have been gagged or locked out) will be granted 'Voice' tonight. There may be a delay of 20 minutes or an hour before these changes go into effect, so I apologise in advance if any of you get caught in that lag-time.

All new members, and any members who have not posted in the last 30 days will have their messages held for approval before being posted. If you notice this happen to you, please send me an e-mail through the board stating your actual user-name (not your nickname) and requesting you be granted 'Voice'. Do not use the Delphi 'private message' function; I never check that inbox.

Thanks. Any problems, let me know.

I find it odd there have been no protests over what has been done to Paul. He's no Larry. Thus far not a peep from his "friends" from the old BT. I cannot believe that this couldn't have been handled differently.

I've corresponded with Paul on this matter and will display the link to his response so there's an opportunity to see the other side of the coin.

Paul's response.

Edit: I tried to copy his response and bring it over here but didn't have any luck. Must be something to do with where it's displayed that it would let me copy.

At any rate, reading the two opinions it seems that no real discussion took place b/4 the ban. A real shame no lessons were learned from the past Breaktime debacle.

Its funny that even the site where censorship is not suppoed to take place and the owner of the site says on his facebook page

"Annoyed and disgusted with the state of the way moderation is being applied over our long time in other $$ sponsered websites Jerrald and I have set up this alternative web site so the discussions and debates we want to have regarding politics, religion, philosophy, education, science, and other important contemporary topics can go on without the mindless obstruction, sanitizing, and/or censorship we seen take over $$sponsered sites in the past. We are the people for all the people!"

they have started censoring as well.

I do believe that there has to be a certain amount of moderation or the site will be Kaos.

Its the owners right to censor any one they want. Its their site isnt it?

Like we say in Afghanistan,

It is what it is

Ron,
I think the ticket is that the censorship/deletion/ and like that is the last resort. And a warning so it's known there's a problem is certainly a good and workable idea.

Sure there's times when it might be over the top language or hate filled speech and the button needs pushed.............but not on a whole thread. That's just plain goofy. You dump a post, let the offensive party know what's up, the repercussions and life goes on.

I don't think there's much need to ban someone unless all else fails. I've had better luck talking it out with someone. They usually get so sick of me, they leave on their own accord.

Nothin to it.

I can understand that. But at least a warning should come first. If at this site you and other mods have stated no censorship come one come all, and things happen like they they happen and precedences are set then dont come out and make a excuse or pretense, with no warning that the rules have changed. Just come out and just state these are the new rules .
Then if the person doesnt abide by the rules yea sure then start with the warnings etc.

But I know in one case it was made personal. The place was going wild, then a PM arrives and says you said this or that and it isnt true apologize or all of your post will be screened

Nothing changed other then the mod took it personal.

Everything was with in the precedence that was set.

Well its the site owners prerogative to do what he wants with his site.

Well anyway, it goes the way of life doesnt it.

Things change, life goes on.
