At the rate you people are posting around here, I am going to have a heart attack, just trying to keep up.

!Gaaahhhh !!

Too fast !

Too fast !

It's driving me crazy !!

Ok, so it was an very short drive...

Not exactly bored.

Getting things done.

I finished my rain collection system. Well, mostly. At least far enough that I could catch some water for laundry.

Oh, and I finished hooking up the washer and dryer. Yep, on the front porch. Grampaw would be proud of me. (He died several years ago, so he was probably watching while I set them up. LOL)

Should have gotten the rainwater collection system done, earlier.

Last two weeks here it has been raining so hard that I had to go down and jump in the river, just to dry out a bit.

Now that I actually have a couple barrels set up... You guessed it. No rain. Just grey clouds.

Speaking of grampaw, I saw him the other day.

~~~
I have been posting on a couple linux forums.
Aside from figuring out that I must have a real problem when it comes to posting...
I learned something else that has me wondering about what happened at Breaktime.
There are many "distros" or types of linux OS.
Each has a group of followers. Blogs. Forums. The main website. Etc.
One of those distros was becoming very popular. (Can't remember which one, but they are still around.)
VERY heavy traffic on their forums.
But they were just barely getting by, financially.
Finally, one day they had to cut way back.
What they did to the forum was almost identical to what happened at Breaktime. And it was done on purpose.
They intentionally made the forum experience distasteful, and drove away a LOT of their foum members.
The purpose was to cut down on the traffic, because they were paying through the nose for that.
Taunton has been struggling the past few years.
They lost their publisher.
They lost a lot of employees. (The ones that are left have to do the jobs of two or three others, before them.)
They had to do the same sort of drastic cutbacks as the aforementioned linux distro/forum.
They now have their own server. It can't be all that big. And I am thinking that they are not paying for a huge 'pipeline' for traffic.
They are using free/open source software. Paying for technical support. But nonetheless, they aren't paying as much anymore, for just the software.
Etc.
Looking back it seems almost eerily similar.
I am left wondering whether they DID do what they did, with the intentional goal of cutting back on the forum traffic ?
Hindsight being what it is, this does make sense. And explains a few things.
~~~

Oh, and where did I see my grampaw ?

In the mirror,

I bet using rain water for your laundry makes a big difference on how your clothes end up!?

Are you collecting for just the laundry, or for other uses?
Are you just collecting off the house? And how many gallons can you hold?

I guess I can see where Taunton could've been swamped with forum traffic. What did they have,... 4 or 5 different forums?
And I know that BT was getting alot of hits per day. Many more than most other forums get in a week or even a month. They sure don't have that problem nowadays!
Heck many times I couldn't keep up with the threads that I was watching/posting to. There are a few of the old die hards that still hang there, and I check in once in awhile, but even if I only go there once a week I can catch up on what's going on real quick. It sure ain't close to what it was.

So is your computer up and running like you want? I'm thinking about setting mine up with Linux Mint to see how that works. But I'm not sure when, as I'm pretty comfy with Ubuntu, although this version seems to hang up every once in awhile. It don't really lock up, it just puts me on ignore while it does it's own thing for a few minutes. I have been keeping my stuff backed up so that if I do make the switch, it should be fairly painless.

I'm getting close to seeing my dad in the mirror, but granpa is still a year or so off At least that's my line!

Right now, I have four 55 gallon barrels hooked up.

I just finished hooking them up properly, yesterday. It cost 45 dollars for just the plumbing that goes from the downspout tube, to the barrels.

There are two gutters/downspouts on the roofs. 2 barrels on each.

It did rain hard again last night. I collected enough water in the one night, to fill one and two-thirds barrels.

Right now, the water is for clothes washing, only.

Eventually I'll buy a good water heater, and plumb in an outdoor shower.

The main tank is 330 gallons. The barrels will get pumped to that.

Problem is, it's metal. And it is very rusty on the inside.

The metal tank has been dry for a while now. Today I'll put in a plug, and fill it.

I'll run some in first, maybe 20 gallons. Let that sit a bit, then drain it. To carry out what rust is already loosely in there.

Then I'll put in about a quart of bleach, and then fill the tank with as much water as I can.

The hope being that the bleach will precipitate a lot of the rust out of the water.

Some day I'll be able to afford a plastic tank.

~~~
Whatever 'pipeline' Taunton has, to the internet, can handle only just so much traffic.
I am guessing they couldn't afford the kind of connection that their former server contractor had. So they can't handle as much traffic.
Breaktime alone, had more traffic than the other forums, combined.
They made it clear that they would like people to use the other parts of their website, rather than the forums.
Seems to me, though, that it would have been less of a shot in their own foot, if they had found better ways to entice the traffic from the forums to the rest of the website, instead of trying to force it over there.
Oh well. It is what it is. They can probably handle the traffic they have now, and I guess that is as good a goal as any.
=0)
~~~

Yes, the computer is running well.

It's already starting to feel like a good pair of shoes.

My biggest problem with Ubuntu was that it was so limited. It just didn't feel comfortable. I couldn't do most of the things I wanted to, because there was no function there.

You have to learn how to make the system function in all the ways that you are used to.

Learning WHAT I needed was followed by learning what was available, was followed by learning where to get it, was followed by learning HOW to get it, was followed by having to back up and learn some arcane language to type into a terminal window... etc.

And putting in the password every 16 seconds !!!

I am a patient man. Especially when it comes to the computer. I am not easily frustrated when it comes to getting something on the computer figured out.

But I was frustrated.

It was easy to see why so many people give up and go back to windows.

But Linux Mint... Worked right out of the box.

All of the functions were right there, working. All of my hardware worked without a problem.

All I had to do was to install my own choice of email programs, since I prefer not to use thunderbird.

Had I preferred Thunderbird, (And I did use it for a while, while on xp pro. It's a pretty good program. I just don't like the way it calls home, and intentionally blocks you from disabling that.), I would already have been all set, without changing a thing.

If I ever recommend a linux distro to a newcomer who is used to windows, it will be Linux Mint.

And there is a new one called Peppermint.

I am going to give that a try, pretty soon. I'll backup my other internal hard drive, format, and start fresh with that. If I don't like it, I'll format again, and go to the newest Linux Mint. (I am currently on the one that is one step back.)

Although, I will no longer experience Peppermint, as a complete newby to linux. So I don't know if I will be able to explain it to people from that perspective.

Mint is based on Ubuntu. (Peppermint may be based more on Debian. I can't remember.)

As such, it does have some of the same few basic problems.

I have experienced the lockup, as well.

Unlike a blue screen of death, if you just sit back and wait a bit, eventually the system comes back, working just like it should. And it only happens once in a blue moon.

If a program locks up, stops responding, etc... It doesn't kill the entire system.

Wait a bit, maybe the program will come back. If it doesn't, kill it. As soon as you kill it, you can start it again.

Linux doesn't preload a ton of programs, like windows does.

Windows does this to give the ILLUSION of speed.

If the program is already loaded, then when you click to start it, it comes right up.

In windows, it wouldn't do that, if it were not preloaded. It would take some time for the program to actually get up there on your screen.

In linux, the program is not loaded at all, until you decide to open it. Then it is loaded. And surprisingly enough, they load up just as fast, if not faster than in windows.

And if you don't decide to open the program, it is not sitting there eating up your ram and cpu.

Sounds like you got the water collection system going on.

A grand total of 550 gallons?

How are you handling the gray water, from the washer?

Steel tanks that have no lining can be a pain, as far as rust goes.

The bleach should also help to keep the water from getting crudy, or green when just sitting there. I wish there was a better way that was cheap to do. I used to use bleach way back when I had a cistern.

I'm glad to see that you got your PC problems worked out. Alot of frustrations I know, but then you did learn a thing or two along the way. I'm glad you are liking Mint, like I said before, I plan on trying it here soon.

I've got to get to the store here soon and buy some CD's to make an install disk. Then I'll have to decide which of my 6 hard drives I want to wipe out and install it on.

The only real thing I lost when I switched from Win98SE to Ubuntu, was loosing the ability to run my old CAD program. I loved it for making technical drawings, but I only used it a few times a year, so it don't hurt too bad. It would be nice to draw up furnace ideas tho.
Other than that I wish it would run NetFlix, but I have another PC, that still runs a stripped down version of XP Pro, and that's all that computer gets to do, play movies.

Talking about forums,... Frenchy showed up at BT Classic about a week ago,... I think he's already got banned or a time out, not sure which. Anyway he wasn't back a day before he got into his old routine, and got a thread shut down shortly afterwards. Not all his fault, the others didn't have to jump in and on him, but he seems to bring it on.

I think that if we renamed this forum, "the Plumber Bob and Luka Show", no one would notice.

I got about 2 and 2/3 barrels of water, out of two and a half days of rain.

Looks like I can count on maybe a barrel a day when it is raining hard.

Water from the washer goes out into the weeds. They LOVE that stuff !

Have you looked for any open source cad programs ? Seems I remember people talking about them, several times at both the Ubuntu forum, and the Mint forum.

Last I heard, NetFlix refuses to port to linux. And I would guess they would not allow anyone else to do so, either.

Too bad. I wonder why ?

I'll have to mention this place to Jerry. He's done some experimenting with solar water heaters, and actually burnt his hand pretty good over it.

I've heard, (never tried), that washer and shower water is good for the garden, that's why I asked.

No I haven't look much at all for open source CAD programs, I need to, and have been meaning to, but I'm getting kinda busy and haven't made the time yet.

I've been getting hit this last few weeks by a couple of companies putting me thru the gauntlet as far as interviewing goes. One is for a job just like my old one, Underground plumbing stuff. Mostly service. They want me to run the crew/operate equipment, there would be 2 guys under me. Just did my 3rd interview, and took a drug test for that one yesterday. The pays not the best and the drive would be longer that I really care for, but it might be a good thing if I can do some talking with them.

The other is a job for a maintenance tech at Zappos.com. They have a "White Elephant" type building, actually two. and they are wanting a night shift Tech to help with the automated sorting/conveyor system. It's right around the corner compared to the other job, and the pay is the same, only way better benefits.

Both are good jobs as far as things I like to do, and after about 16 months of lay off, I'm chopping at the bit to get back to work!!! Both are good leads, but nothing is written in stone yet, so in between I'm still trying to hit 5 companies a day for other leads. It gets old.

But when I get time to take a serious look into it I'll be checking out some CAD software.

Got time for music ?

Everyone likes free music !!

http://www.jamendo.com/en/

With the quality and selection available at that site, why download any of the illegal downloads ?

~~~
Must have been tough finding someone to pee in that cup for you.
And yes, washer and shower water are -very- good for plants.
As long as it is just getting directed out there to the plants. Don't be spraying the stuff ON the plants.
And BTW, if you pee in the shower, it's even better for them. LOL
>>>"Must have been tough finding someone to pee in that cup for you.
"<<<
Actually, I've had to be a good boy for quite awhile now.
So everything is cool there! I'm not worried about that at all. It's just that I'd like to have both jobs! So I'm kinda torn about which one to take, but the Zappos job seems the best choice.But I love being outdoors. But I love the techy challenge. But I love operating equipment. But,... But,... But,...
I'll probably check out that music link tomorrow, as it's getting late here in KY, and I'm about due to go to bed.
Catch ya in the AM.
Which job would you become bored with, the quickest ?
I have never downloaded music. Ever.
Since discovering that site, I have already started a collection.
>>>"Which job would you become bored with, the quickest ?"<<<
I'm not sure either would get boring.
I did 6 or so years on the outdoor plumbing thing and never really got bored with it. Sure some jobs sucked, but I never had a day I regretted going to work. Always thinking about stuff job related, not worrying, just thinking.
I worked as a Maint tech for almost 10 years, maybe a tad less. Never had a day that I didn't like it there either. Some very challenging days. And occasionally some people who where a pain, but I always figured out how to deal with it. Well now I'd have to say that the last two of my "techy" years was real boring, mainly CAD programming. It put me to sleep at times. But this is more like the type of "Techy work that I liked, plus some general plant maint, which is cool too. And then there is the fact that you get to be around alot of women. Which at first that's pretty cool,... but they tend to show their ass', and not in a good way!
Both jobs are with bigger companies, and both should be pretty secure. If all pans out like I expect it to, I'll probably end up taking the Maintenance Tech., job as it's closer and better benefits, plus I think the mental challenge is better. Might even have room to grow in that company, were as the plumbing job doesn't show much room to advance, but I'd probably get better pay raises for the first few years.
Anyways alot is gonna depend on that Zappos interview on Tuesday.
I'm really going to bed this time,... I swear!
Jerry ? You mean Pedro ? I think he is already signed up, here.
If you direct someone to sign up here, please tell them to use a good email address, a good name, (One that actually makes sense), and don't put some advertising or selling website as their home page, nor 'exotic' location.
As slow as this place is, We are constantly flooded with spammers trying to become members so they can spam the members here, and/or use the system to spam others. (I don't know how that latter one works, but I know they can do it. Lots of complaints to the software designers on their forum, because of that.)
So there are filters set up. And all new memberships have to be approved. Any request that looks 'funky' at all, gets denied.
You know that he'll read it when/if he drops by.
I'm gonna drop him a line this evening if all goes well.
I'm out tinkerin' with my old truck right now. Tracking down some leaks, mainly I think there from the thing setting all winter.
I got a rear seal on the back end of the tranny leaking, I think that's the main leak I need to fix. Plus I gotta get a new battery, but the one that's in it now was a re-furbished equipment battery, 1100 CCA, and it is several years old now so that didn't surprise me any. Hope I can get another one like it.
Hey Luka!
I'm tinkering with some sketches on using collected rainwater to run across black galvanized panels boxed into foam insulating panels with salvaged sliding glass patio doors sealing off the top.
It would be supported on top of a trellis of sorts - http://growing-image.com/_img/portfolio/carpentry/Redwood-trellis-deck-Sausalito.jpg - with a shower head inside the ceiling and a pull chain.
The real trick is controlling the temp as experienced with another water heating test -- used black 5 gallon buckets buried in the ground with 2" foam insullation packed around to hold temps and covered with a clear acrylic cover - dag gone near burnt my hoof off when I tested it mid afternoon one day.
