Re: WinDD
First the good news.
It did make a perfect clone.
The bad news is that it completely wiped out the hard drive I cloned it TO.
There is nothing anywhere, that tells you that it will wipe out the destination drive.
I thought it would just add the clone to what was already on the hard drive. There was scads of space for it. Could have done it a couple dozen times and still not filled up the space.
I had a LOT of irreplaceable data on that hard drive, and so far have not found a way to get it back.
Bottom line, if you want to clone a hard drive this program does it. And does so very quickly.
And at only 180k download !
Just be sure there is nothing on the destination drive that you want to keep.

It always sucks to loose valuable data!
I take it that none was backed up. This is were I should be lecturing you about backups. But you've already suffered enough. And I've been in the same boat too.
I have about 6 hard drives that work right now, Usually I keep one or 2 just for my backups, the rest are for the day to day stuff, and for testing.
I can't help ya get your data back, But I can easily spare one HD for you so you'll have one just for backups. That'll help in the future, if you want. They ain't big ones, but plenty big enough for backing up data.
Also it might have helped if you'd partitioned the HD into 2 or more HD's. But if the data was already on in before you partition it, that data would get gone too.
Lemme know if you want one, I can ship it to you for $5 total, and it should be there in 3-4 days. I just got a package from Bill Wicklund, (PlumbBill). it only took 3 days.
Anyway, I feel your pain dude. learning can suck sometimes! Don't let it get ya down.

The drive is an external 500 gigabyte hard drive.
And it WAS the backup.
An awful lot of data on that disk that is nowhere else.
I was keeping it as a sort of vault, while I used my other two hard drives for wiping, then installing and checking out the different distros.
I decided to wipe the laptop because it literally takes more than ten minutes to start up, and then you wait forever for it to do anything, once it is running. (No, it isn't chock full of startup programs, etc. It was pretty clean.)
I didn't have anything else available that was big enough to contain a clone of the laptop.
And I thought the clone program would just make the clone like a backup, IOW, added to the data already on the external HD.
My bad. Never ASSUME anything of the sort.
I DO consider the lack of warning that the program will wipe, and repartion the destination drive... To be pitiful.
Considering the number of people who will have to learn the way that I did, and the possible value of all the lost data, it's almost, in a way, criminal negligence not to give a warning about that, anywhere and everywhere that the program is available.
At the VERY least.. Not in any way 'professional'.
~~~
Now, what I have tried...
I tried GParted.
I tried TestDisk.
No joy.
What is running right now, is "PhotoRec".
It is isntalled automatically when you download and install TestDisk.
It LOOKS like it may be sorting out and recovering at least most of the lost data.
We'll see.
It could, of course, just be "Sorting out and recovering" the clone that was put on there. LOL
It's going to take a few hours. Maybe all day and part of the night.
When it is finished, I'll let you know how well it worked.
If it works, then I'll type up a short tutorial on using the program to recover data from any hard drives you may want to use it on.
It's fairly simple, but like anything else that you do in Ubuntu, if you have to go to the command line, it gets pretty arcane.
And the descriptions they give of the programs don't really help much when it comes to running the program.
Mostly because they tend to assume that you already know a bunch of stuff. It's like expecting a kindergarten kid to already understand how to obtain the circumference of a circle, when you walk them through pi.
~~
As for the hard drive...
Thank you kindly, but it's not necessary.
My backups have gotten so large that anything under 60 gigs for backup, has become almost a joke.
I have two internal hard drives. The smallest of which is 160 gigs.
And the external.
I was playing with both of the internals, and made the bad decision not to use one of those for the clone, because I didn't want to wipe out one of my test distros.
Next time I'll think twice before trying something new with my backup disk.
Had I partitioned the external, it wouldn't have made any difference. All partitionas would have been lost.
Thanks again dude.
I'm not giving up yet.
And if this works, it will prove to be an invaluable tool to have and share.
Here I am kicking myself for not having waited until I could buy an 8 gig or larger usb stick, to backup the laptop with...
Well, all I can say is,... keep me posted, and if you do get back some of your lost data, don't loose it again. Then I'll have to laugh!
Good luck, and like I said, keep me posted.
How come on some threads I get this:
Forum Permissions You cannot start new topics You cannot reply to topics HTML is disabled UBBCode is enabled
But on this thread I get:
Forum Permissions You can start new topics You can reply to topics HTML is disabled UBBCode is enabled
And how in the heck do you start a new thread, if you desire to do so?
Hi Huck.
The former sounds like a problem with cookies.
Have you told the forum to remember you, ? Do you use session cookies ?
Are you seeing the "cannot" message in an area where posting is 'locked' ?
As for the latter...
If you go back out to the category, (for instance, this thread is located in the "your shout" category...
Scroll to the top of the page, and you will see:
"Post" "Previous" "Index" "Next" Etc...
Click on "Post" to start a new thread.
Huck, How to post:
On the line below your name when you go to a folder-in this case-Your Shout...........
There's a line that has POST in it-click on that.
A new thread box will come up where you can place the title and then body of your message.
Why you're getting the messages................I'm at a loss.
Luka might surely know the answer.
Make sure you check the box below your replies (or an original post) that says:
A couple of updates here.
I am running Linux Mint, and liking it.
Been running it for a while now. Haven't gone back to Ubuntu. It ran, right out of the box. No installing a bunch of stuff, looking for codecs, drivers, programs, etc.
If I recommend Linux to others at all, especially people who have never used it before... I will be recommending Linux Mint.
Pop in the disc, choose to install, and you will be up and running in a fraction of the time it takes windows to install.
And as I said, everything works, right out of the box. With windows I have to go looking for drivers. With Mint, everything already works !
~~~
I have a newer laptop.
Sort of a birthday present to myself. (I turn 53 on the 21st.)
It is only about 5 years old. The old one was more than 11 years old.
The old one finally kakked. Or at least close enough to it that it simply wasn't worth investing anything more, in.
I had to replace the hard drive and optical drive on the newer one, but since then, it has worked beautifully.
Had I had this one, to take with me on trips, (like the trips to the fests), I would never have been without a computer or internet. It's amazing all the different ways this thing can connect to the internet. And in so many places !!
It is a Toshiba Tecra A4-S313
The one thing I still really need to get for it is a 12v power supply. (The laptop is 15v. I am talking about the power supply that plugs in the 12v cigarette lighter in the car.)
I don't want a universal type. I used one of those on the sony. I am positive that that power supply played a big part in the demise of that laptop.
I want to get one that was actually made for this particular laptop.

To all:
Now, the real reason I was drawn back in here to post again.
The whole deal with Breaktime, and what happened before I walked away.
.
I, you... All of us... We are all responsible for our own actions.
And our own REactions.
"Now look what you made me do", is NOT an excuse for having a bad reaction to someone.
You can ALWAYS just walk away.
I either forgot that fact, or ignored it, because I wanted to help and to make a difference.
I should have kept to it.
I should have been paying more attention to my own actions and reactions.
Toward the end, I was reacting, (and acting), very badly.
I became an arse, both behind the scenes, and out where anyone could see.
I made bad decisions. Again, both behind the scenes, and out in the open.
I became ridgid. Controlling. And angry.
I even quit for the wrong reasons.
But once I was away for a while, and had time to think and recuperate, I began to see just how wrong I was. And for how long...
I guess the real reason I am posting is to communicate the fact that I know I was wrong many times, in many ways. And that I am not walking around angry, resentful, or blaming anyone other than myself.
I hope that I am among friends here, and that what is past, is past.

Glad you are up and running!!!
I've had a few people recommend the "Mint" version. I might give it a try here soon.
BossHog has given you an HBD shout at BTC: http://forums.delphiforums.com/breaktimeclass/messages?msg=2006.1
Not sure if you'll go there, but I figured I'd mention it.
Have you been back to the old Break time any? I go there on occasion, but not as much as before the change.

I lost my logins to all those places, when I switched to linux.
Not really ready yet, to get started again.
Please tell Ron I said thank you.
=0)
Looks like there's going to be a good fest this year.
Wish I still had some good pics of Rez. I'd have a go at trying to make up a logo.
I had an idea for one that I thought Rez himself would approve of, but I lost all the pics I had.
