Was talking to the boy about Cub Scouts. The school sent home a flyer about joining a local pack. So as we're asking the boy if he thought that was something he might like to give a try, I started telling him all the cool stuff they might do.
Talked about group camping, maybe shooting a gun, archery, etc. He asked how group camping would be different than the camping we do all summer long.
We started talking about learning new tasks and earning badges ... and he starts telling me he wants a "fire making badge". When we camp, he's big on helping start then tend the camp fire. as soon as we hit the camp site he's out of the truck and into the woods gathering "fire sticks" ...
So as I say he can earn a badge for learning how to do certain things ... he says ... Like Fire Building.
I can learn how to help make a really big fire by squirting on the bottle of starter fluid!
second trip of the season me and Cath went camping without the kids. Tried a new park and learned they don't cover their firewood. Just have a big pile "out back" .. and it'd rained all the week before ... so we got to buy soaking wet fire wood. Never to be defeated I drained the coleman stove and lanterns and soaked the wet wood in the coleman fuel. Eventially we had just about the only decent fire at the camp ground.
When we got back, I bought a bottle of charcoal lighter fluid that gets packed with the camp kitchen stuff, so now we're never lacking of a roaring fire ... even if I have to cheat to make one.
Told the boy ... pretty sure squirting flamable liquid onto a burning fire goes against Cub Scout Rules ... so some "tricks" ... we'll just keep to ourselves!
Said I also don't think there's a camping badge for "getting Daddy another beer" ....

That falls under the "Be Prepared" clause...

Visited some friends Sat Nite ... they'd just bought a portable fire pit.
Not good when my 7 yr old has to suggest maybe the big logs are just smoking 'cause they're too big and we need smaller logs or more "fire started twigs" ....
They get all the free fire wood they'll ever need from their neighbor ... told my bud to invest in a nice maul. Start splitting the cord wood into quarters ... or smaller.
They "cabin camp" at the wife's family property ... and her brothers are the "fire police" ... told him spend one fall evening in a tent ... he'll figure it out!
