Taunton Changeover

Man,
The natives are restless all across the boards. Has me wondering what the administrators might have been thinking when they decided to push this through.

I understand the ad revenue angle and with publishing taking a hit, they are certainly welcome to try things in order to stay afloat.

But to unveil (as has been seen in the cooking, gardening and threads forums) this thing that in itself appears so opposite the usable forum we knew screams ?..........

The oft repeated "it is a changeable platform, we'll be tweeking this in the future" doesn't sound so sensible.
Certainly could have been "tweeked" in advance to at least keep a modicum of user friendliness.

It is wild,...kinda ,... right now, but, there are plenty of alternatives.

I gotta question,... now I'm new, and don't know much history,... but since this site was already up,... why haven't more people been over here?

edited to add ... much like a real bar ... it's dead here 'cause it's dead here. If more people were around ... more people would be around.

Not quite sure why it's never taken off.

Re: Taunton Changeover

If there was no other place to go, I suppose we'd be jammed like during the purges. But with the Backroom and now BT Classic, those that have a beef with one of us here won't make the effort. And others will go where the action is.

Just one of those anomolies.

But as usual, we'll keep this place open should the need arise.

And what the hell, sometimes the quiet place is enough for me.

I am surprised that BT has been down so long.

Not too long ago I was over there and all the forums are down except knots.

It will be ruff for me trying to figure out that new software. I felt like a fish out of water in Cooks Talk, with the new stuff. I'll either learn, or I'll burn I guess! :-)

Heck maybe I'll burn while I learn! hehehe

Re: Taunton Changeover

Whelp, I remember the way I fumbled about the last major changeover...........of course I was just a novice computer user............now so much more advanced I think I'll figger it out ok, but the missing things that make sense is the foreboding part.

No tracking of read posts? no problem on an unused site, but with sometimes hundreds of posts in response to an initial thread? To claim later fixing on this one is just plain ignorant.

Email notification? not a deal breaker if when you go on you can activate "unread messages to me". If there isn't the later, there sure should be the former.

more plain ass'd dumb.

Honest to god, that is the most overpowering drag about this-no one seems to care (i.e. the operators, administrators of the site etc).

And it's that don't give a xxxx attitude that got America where it is today.

I'm with ya, on the, "No one seems to care", feeling, and it is frustrating, to say the least. I get that "Second Class Citizen" feeling from them, and the way they are handling this change over.

I am trying very hard to keep a good attitude.

Well, BT is back up! Rick called while I was typing this and told me. Not sure if it's stable tho, I know some had gotten in earlier today, and in short order it crashed on him, and all but the Knots forum went down.

I'm gonna put my boots on before I got back tho!!! :-D

But that FHB situation is so USER UNFRIENDLY that it's going to be so hard to sell ads I hope they got some primo salespeople.

html tags?

Get the hell outta here-I'm a 60 y.o carpenter for gods sake. And yes, I know.............it's easy.

Well if it's so easy, why is there a wysiwyg format?

and why isn't it available on that drupal?

Too advanced or archaic?

But, you see-even I have learned one html

Re: Taunton Changeover

Is it just me or is the BT site just hard on the eyes to read? It just seems a strain to me to get through the posts with all of the seeming clutter. Perhaps it was posted and I just never read it, but why was the format changed in the first place? Cost? I thought it was one of the best ones I had ever seen befor they messed it up.

Re: Taunton Changeover

I don't know what to tell you regarding the why. I've heard that with this new system all the content will be google-able, so way more looks directed to it-ad-$'s.

There's some other rumors, but it's seeming more that either they were looking for something their techs could do to enhance their work experience or they just wanted to weed out all the chaf-open it up to a new bunch of "experts".

Hard on the eyes? You bet.

And harder on the head. Navigating, no matter what anyone says that's got more nerd in 'em than me, is not user friendly. To have to scroll up down up down in order to find a response to you is no picnic.

I've noticed all the photos embedded in at least two photo gallery threads are nothing but X's. Further, no attmnt links neither.

That one I sure hope will be corrected.

Sure is something.

Cal,
Let us know when the Dust settles at the new & improved BT, we might then check it out. The place was getting old & we also passed on going there.
The Star posse was the straw that broke this back. Then add the mix of posters giving info on a builders site who could not find their a$$ with both hands, never worked a day building, but always had something to say!
Glad there is now 3 place to go to other then BT.

Amazing that all the others access and use is so much easier than the current offering at BT.

Maybe not amazing. Surprising at least.

I've been to a few other forums that had that layout. Not a big problem when the thread holds a half dozen replies. Even a page full of say 20 or so.

But when did BT have such a light exchange? Some questions sure, but the in depth ones-not often.... Add the volume of posts in the myriad of topics and it's overpowering.

Hey, here's an interesting take on it. Use that software, thin out the ranks, add google direction to the site........

Increase new traffic, thin out the regulars............

Re: Taunton Changeover

I dunno.

After taking a look several times today I'm more deceived than I was the first time I looked in there.

Deceived was the first word that plopped in my head, not sure if it is the one I should use.

But for instance. In advance, we heard the gushy proclamations on how this "new" and "improved" forum would be coming soon............

Not very long in advance by the way.

About long enough to generate a couple hundred posts on what it would mean to the forum-mostly from regulars with a sprinkling of ...........you ever heard of these guys?..........non-regs.

The camp was pretty much divided as you would expect, old guys-no change.........new guy (s) - this current BT is antiquated, hard to use, backward.

Now, that might have been the case when they first changed to Prospero, but not now that we had used it for several yrs. We could follow threads, got notified of replies, picture posting seemed easy, cripes-no problemo's.

So alright, questions are asked and no replies of substance.
No preview, no noth'in.

We started to see the problems as the launch date kept getting moved back. When a link to the Threads Gardening and Cooking groups popped up, we got a first hand look on what was to come.

Admittedly I thought to myself, well-there's always this place in case the bottom drops out. And as usual, we would have been here, door unlocked and chips and peanuts in the bowls.

We should have marketed it better but look what happens. Dino took the dour end in sight and conjured up BT Classic.
What a genious idea! They've had huge numbers over there, then the onslaught of the Cooks and Gardeners! Man, just like a refuge camp on the border.

And what an appropriate place-the same old software-easier than all get out. Instant welcome! Gotta hand it to the old speedo.

And what it shows is that much of the real life of these forums are all about the comraderie, the community. Leftists and those backward Republican conservative right wingers all cojoling around the fire-arm in arm...........man, what a beautiful site.

With mass disaster comes an assembly of the oddest combinations. Way different than what happened here during the couple purges from BT. There was no mass hysteria, just the ejected and their buds. So, what happens? They start up again going at each other. (after a brief bludgeoning of Taunton).

Timing is everything.

And sorry for rambling on. I just had this epiphany and you were the poor bastard I told it to.

Merry Christmas!

Re: Taunton Changeover

Here's some handy survival tips, if you wander over to 'Ground Zero'.

Forget the boots, not even hip waders work. You have got to have those chest waders, it's the only way.

Next put on a stupid hat, mines a Bullwinkle hat.

Set an decent sized mirror right beside your monitor when you go over there.

If you follow these simple tips, before you go there, you will be far less likely to blow a gasket while there!

Also, keep you time limited to just a few minutes per visit, to begin with.

I hope this helps some.

Re: Taunton Changeover

Well lessee.

I've been desk bound for a couple days..........well, between the desk and outside around the rancho.

I come in, bump the mouse and take a peek. Something I'm hoping happen ...........

didn't.

Still the same layout, same frustrations and the same threads wondering ?

Now, I'm into my pissed mode. There's been no, nada, zip of any communication from those in charge of the changeover.

We get a notice that the Tavern is open. BFD. Another page that don't work well.

Just what's needed.

I'm thinking maybe somebody around the water cooler says...........

"man, those bastards are hot!"

"what pray tell can we do to tone it down?"

"hmmmmmmm, how bout we toss 'em the Tavern?"

"That's it, you sir/ma'am are a genious!"

Not one bit of communication about specific questions. Yay or Nay. Either you can change it or not. I've not looked at the booklet from Drupal but c'mon......

I hadn't put in a Fisher-Paykal Dishwasher drawer either till Thursday. I read the manual.

It works.

If you flip up that thing in there, will it hold wine glasses and keep the stems from breaking?

sure can, that's what it says here in the manual.

Admittedly I know didley about programing. Couldn't do it if my life depended on it. Crap, can barely make BOLD text overthere.

But I also can speak a mild version of the kings english.
And that's what there seems to be a lack of.

And what's really curling my hair is the lack of response to my request for a dialog on ideas to Permanently Honor our buddy and longtime Breaktime Master of Ceremonies-REZ.

Not one peep, yes or no.

Damn man, I'm more frustrated now than I was dealing with those multiple hook bras back in the early 60's.

Calvin,

I know what ya mean! The frustration is so thick on every forum I go to, (you know, the 4 I mean),that I'm scarred to light a smoke, of any kind, for fear of a blast. hehehe

I have no good news, or spirit lifting advice to give you, I wish I did.

Right now you have as much of a chance of actually getting Rez-ponse from the PTB, as you do, smelling a mouse fart in a whirl wind! They respond to a very select few, it seems.

I'm hoping that next week will be better, but I'm not holding my breath.

Now Grant found a way to get a quick response! But I wouldn't recommend that! hehehe

Re: Taunton Changeover

The posting sabatical is coming up to it's end. Stands to reason I'd be notified of a reply from Ed on the morning after it started. Be interesting to see if he's finally answered directly to a question I've posed.

Blue's been gagged over at BTC. Sides drawn, opinions given. Heck, he's even birthed a new site in response.

Been some pretty seething remarks made in the backroom. Man, some of the stuff folks can come up with. The separation from real public interaction just doesn't change.

RJW continues to be the controversial figure, even in a humanitarian effort.

And this place just plods along, now seemingly un-needed as a last resort.

Sort of like deja vu, yet different.

So, how's it go'in with you?

Re: Taunton Changeover

Hey, the long diatribe is fine-it has it's place and purpose. Afterall, that's what the internet is/has become,(besides the obvious). A place for opinion. Similar to the letters to the editor page in a paper. It's as anonymous as you make it and can be very telling of the mind of the writer.

Now with editorial control you usually don't read letters written like the ones we seem too familiar with on the forums. I don't seem to remember any first amendment challenges in papers, tho could certainly be wrong about that. So what's the hubbub when those in charge of a forum try to maintain a modicum of class by commenting on a post to the writer or eventually to jerking that post?

It is a fine line between free speech and editorial control. While it would be fine to lean to the former and rely on the writer to pen it appropriately, that don't seem to happen near often enough.

As to certain posters online persona........mama mia is that a warped topic. Too many seemingly want a freeforall forum, yet the same call for one poster's head when he or she "bothers" them with their opinion.

It all boils down to ..........

So there you go, my own diatribe. Much ado about nothing, to quote a guy that could right pretty well. My hope is the friendships that were formed because of BT will continue, whether or not the forum returns. Pity there won't be new ones if it doesn't.
